Packaging in Cincinnati: A History

Ohio Valley Goodwill’s top-notch packaging service is following in the footsteps of many other great packaging companies in Cincinnati. It is a great honor to be a leader in a local industry with such a long and fascinating history. Here are some highlights of the Queen City’s packaging past.

Packaging Meat

During the middle of the 1800s, Cincinnati was one of the largest meatpacking cities in the country. If you have ever heard our fair city referred to as “Porkopolis,” this is the origin of that moniker. Meatpacking was of incredible importance to the economy of Cincinnati, and the packaging services in Cincinnati were crucial to the industry as a whole. The Ohio River, National Road, Miami and Erie Canal and railroads gave Cincinnati access to markets across the region. Ohio’s farmers travelled to Cincinnati with their livestock. The packaging services in the city slaughtered, processed and sold the meat to western settlers or shipped it to other markets.

P&G’s Packaging Prescience

Procter & Gamble are among the titans of packaging history. They were leaders in push to create and leverage strong national brands. Packaging was one way they set themselves apart. The orange Tide bottle has become as iconic as McDonald’s “golden arches” or the Nike “swoosh.” That insight and investment into packaging in Cincinnati has kept P&G on top for generations. A few years ago, they actually re-released some products with “retro” packaging. Here’s what Tide brand manager Mark Christenson said about the vintage bottles:

“Technology has changed how we wash and dry our clothes and there are a multitude of products and formulas available, but then and now Tide remains the trusted choice for getting clothes clean. And now Tide customers can enjoy vintage packaging on the outside with today’s performance inside each retro-themed package of Tide, Bounce, and Downy.
