The Power of People: Why Mercedes-Benz Chooses Humans over Robots

Great news for humankind: the robots have not won. Not yet, anyway!

assembly lines ditch robots for people

In a move many might consider surprising for 2016, Mercedes-Benz has ditched some assembly-line automation in favor of people.

The reason? The robots couldn’t keep pace with the numerous customizable options for the cars, so the solution called for human brainpower. Where there were once robots alongside assembly lines, there are now men and women quickly picking through cup holder options, various decals, several types of wheels, and even four kinds of tire valve caps.

According to Markus Schaefer, Mercedes-Benz’s head of production, “Robots can’t deal with the degree of individualization and the many variants that we have today. We’re saving money and safeguarding our future by employing more people.”

In other words, when it comes to quick-on-your-feet thinking, the humans can still beat the ‘bots. At Ohio Valley Goodwill, we have known this truth for over a century. That’s why the heart of our business has always been in cultivating a group of highly motivated employees who are passionate about their work.
