Historic Fulfillment Services: The Pony Express

Between 1860 and 1861, the American West fell in love with the speed, efficiency and romance of a fulfillment service. Never before or since has a package delivery service inspired such awe as the “Pony Express.”

The true name of this speedy horseback mail run from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California was the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company.  But, that doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue. The service’s common name does a much better job of capturing the majesty of the series of horseback relay stations that shaved 10 days off the communication time between America’s east and west coasts.

Though the Pony Express is a fixture of American Western culture, it actually didn’t last for terribly long. A new invention known as the telegraph was quickly winding its way toward California, and its completion brought instant electronic communication to California. Still, to those who love fulfillment, there is nothing more inspiring than the hard-riding cowboys of the Pony Express. The Goodwill Industrial Services team loves to think about fulfillment, it is one of our passions. And, while the age of all-night dessert rides is behind us, we are still working just as hard to provide outsourced fulfillment services to businesses in Cincinnati.
